Speakers

David Hicklin, DMD, MAGD
Dr. Hicklin earned his dental degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2006. He completed a GPR at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia in 2007 and joined the faculty of the GPR at the completion of his training. Dr. Hicklin became Program Director in 2010 and served in that role until 2024 when he left to join Family Dental Health. He is a member of the American Dental Association and received his Mastership from the Academy of General Dentistry. He is very involved in continuing dental education and has received numerous accolades. David enjoys outdoor activities with his family, including hiking, camping, and snow skiing.
Julie Ann Barna, DMD
Dr. Barna is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and also completed a 1-year GPR at UPenn. She practiced in Lewisburg, PA and also served as an assistant surgeon in maxillofacial surgery at Evangelical Community Hospital. During her career, Dr. Barna was actively involved at the national level for both the American Dental Association and Academy of General Dentistry. After retiring from full-time practice, she continues to consult as well as work part-time for Avesis, doing dental claims and hearings. Julie and her husband, Mark, love to travel, spend time on the slopes, and enjoy the fruits of Mark’s profession – winemaking – by hosting wine tastings and dinner parties!
Mark Veraguth
Mark is a native to Santa Rosa, CA and joined Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery in 1989 as an assistant to head winemaker, Barbara Frank. Mark studied at the University of California Davis, earning his B.S. in Civil Engineering. During his studies, Mark worked as a cellar and vineyard helper at S. Anderson Vineyards, one of California’s most respected sparkling-wine producers. He found that his skills in production and logistics of civil engineering translated well to the wine industry and decided to never leave. In 1983 Mark was promoted to assistant winemaker at S. Anderson Vineyards and remained there until 1989 when he joined Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery. Mark became the Head Winemaker in 2004 and held that position until his recent retirement. Mark, also, is an avid downhill skier.
Matt Evans, DMD
Dr. Evans received his dental degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1998. He completed the general practice residency at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital and completed his specialty training in endodontics at the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland Oregon. He has been in private practice in Lexington, SC since 2001. Matt started his ski career at Appalachian Ski Mountain ski school in 1976. Since that time, he has dedicated his free time to chasing the weightless feeling of powder skiing as often as possible while continuing to practice endodontics long enough to pay off the mortgage.
Jim Curtis, DMD
Jim retired in December 2023 after 45 years in dentistry. He spent the last 25 years of his career in Columbia teaching and practicing in the dental department and GPR program at Prisma Health Richland. He has given over 200 invited lectures over the years – locally, nationally, and internationally. Jim remains involved with dentistry through “chat & chew” sessions with current dental residents, consulting, lecturing, and dental malpractice defense expert witness services. A former member of the Clemson Ski Team (YES, Clemson had a ski team in the 1970s), he embarrassingly never finished a race! Nowadays, his mantra is, “I finished the run with bones intact!”

Additional Information

Heavenly Mountain Ski Resort is one of the most unique and beautiful skiing and snowboarding destinations in the United States. It’s the only mountain where you can ski in two states at the same resort! Located in South Lake Tahoe, CA, Heavenly offers spectacular vistas on 4,800 acres of skiable terrain with 97 trails and 29 lifts. The terrain provides opportunities for all skiing and riding levels. March is the snowiest month at Heavenly so plan on a great time on the slopes. The resort’s average annual snowfall is 251 inches and 2026’s building “super” El Niño may bring even more snow!

The closest airport is Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO). Heavenly is located about 60 miles from the airport and usually takes about 75 minutes to drive. Various shuttle or rental car arrangements are available to get you across the mountains and into the Lake Tahoe basin. You can also fly into Sacramento, CA, which is located 110 miles west.

Accommodations are plentiful in South Lake Tahoe and the surrounding region, from hotels to condos and whole house rentals.

We look forward to having you join us for great CE, skiing, and fellowship!
